Culture Mill will present two performances made in Berlin as a part of Durham Independent Dance Artists’ second season. The double bill, titled “Berlin/Durham”, will present works by Anja Müller and Tommy Noonan in the same weekend. Though very different from one another, each piece experiments with the limits and definitions of the dance medium – aesthetically, economically and politically.

In a daring piece of experimentation, Berlin-based performer Anja Müller creates a one-woman musical that playfully approaches the question of where art stands in our entertainment-crazed culture. Her beat-heavy, bass-pumping show brazenly parades pop-culture clichés. But beneath the fake bling is real irony: Müller’s brash ‘La Mula’ persona asks some tough questions about being an artist today: Has poverty become a vital artistic principle? And why do we feel under constant pressure to entertain?

In "What Doesn't Work,” three people devote themselves to an impossible undertaking: the creation of a symphony of movement without composition. They shape the irrational, the secret and the spontaneous with their bodies, wringing a landscape of physical memories out of every moment. In this intensely physical work, Tommy Noonan, Anja Müller, and Murielle Elizéon explore the endless and unlimited possibilities of spontaneous decision, drawing eclectic and surreal forms into a calm room as if every second were both their first and their last. Out of this rigorous and exhaustive process, “What Doesn’t Work” asks many questions: is there a productive limit in our capacity for forms? How is the history of each body evident in the chaos? What is the relationship between movement and meaning?
