Talking with Strangers

Culture Mill presents Talking with Strangers, February 8th and 9th at 8pm at the ADF Studios (721 Broad St., Durham, NC). Talking with Strangers is the culmination of Canadian choreographer David Norsworthy’s 3-week long residency with Culture Mill in Saxapahaw, NC. A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York and a young professional choreographer based in Toronto, Norsworthy has been called by The Globe and Mail an “exceptionally lucid performer, technically impressive and articulate with choreographic detail” and his work has been lauded by The New York Times, Dance Beat and others.

Over the course of three weeks in Saxapahaw, Norsworthy will explore the relationship between dance, choreography and its place within a community through a number of conversations with total strangers about both his own as well as their relationships to dance. Norsworthy will interweave these conversations with an intensive period of studio work in Saxapahaw, seeking to find a relationship between the conversations and his own physical dance-making process, which will at times also be influenced by encounters with local artists Monet Marshall, Murielle Elizéon, CJ Suitt, Ginger Wagg and Tommy Noonan.

The process will eventually culminate in Talking with Strangers -- a performance devised over this three-week period, and a choreographic representation of the process, ideas and possibilities uncovered over the course of his residency. In addition to the two performances, Norsworthy will also offer a masterclass at ADF Studios on Thursday, February 7th from 7 to 9pm. More information and registration for the masterclass at: www.americandancefestival.org

Norsworthy is a graduate of The Juilliard School, and performs professionally in Canada, the USA, Europe and Australia.Talking with Strangers is a part of his larger project titled Contemplating Artistic Motivation and Responsibility. More at www.davidnorsworthy.com.

Talking with Strangers is produced in collaboration with Durham Independent Dance Artists and the American Dance Festival’s Samuel H. Scripps Studios.
