The Solar Theater Project

The Solar Theater Project begins a 3-year collaboration with Culture Mill, supporting the development of original theater works, lighting installations and new solar theater technology. In the first residency, lighting designer Carl Faber, theater director Mikhael Tara Garver, and playwright Dean Poyner will develop text for an original performance, and will begin the planning stage for a new solar-powered lighting installation -- part of the development of a mobile solar lighting kit designed for site-specific theater.

Mikhael Tara Garver is an immersive theater director who has worked at the Atlantic Theater, American Repertory Theater, Collaboraction Theater, American Conservatory Theater, The Kitchen, Bard University, Grand Arts Center, New York University, The Goodman Theater, The Public Theater, American Theater Company, Timeline Theatre, DePaul University, PlayPenn, Court Theatre, and Steppenwolf Theater Company.  She was the associate director for Sleep No More in Boston and a consultant in New York.  She was the Artistic Director of beloved Chicago Storefront Uma Productions; Time Out Chicago Top 20 People to Watch 2007; top storefront company of the decade Time Out Chicago; along with numerous Jeff and After Dark Awards.  She was the first International Emerging Artist selected by the National Theater of Scotland and an Artistic Associate of SITI company.  She is the founder of The New Ensemble a training linking live, technology, and immersive performance.  She is also the Creative Director of Woodshed Collective. She has taught at New York University, Bard, Harvard, DePaul, and Columbia University.  She was an adjunct at Barnard University in the Fall of 2013.

Carl Faber is a freelance lighting designer based in Portland, Oregon. Carl has collaborated with theaters, companies, directors, choreographers, and visual artists across the United States, Europe, and Asia, including recent designs with Arena Stage, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Ars Nova, Attack Theatre, Shanghai Centre Theatre, Wadsworth Theater, Theater Freiburg, and Non-Stop Wroclaw. Carl has toured with extensively with Bon Iver and The National, has designed dozens of productions for Norwegian Cruise Lines, and served as the Co-Lighting Supervisor at the Williamstown Theatre Festival (Artistic Director Nicholas Martin) in 2008 and 2009. Carl is a Founding Member and Resident Lighting Designer for Woodshed Collective, responsible for the Lighting Design of 2011′s The Tenant. Additionally, Carl is a Guest Lecturer and Designer at the Crossroads School in Los Angeles.

Dean Poyner's plays have been developed and produced with the Tennessee Repertory Theatre (Ingram New Works Lab), Great Plains Theatre Conference, Playwrights’ Center (Core Member Apprentice), Kennedy Center, The Puzzle Festival NYC, Centre Stage Greenville (New Play Festival Winner), Trustus Theatre (Playwrights Festival Winner), Arena Players Repertory Theatre, Hyde Park Theatre (nominated for three Iden B. Payne Awards), American Theatre of Actors, Cairns Festival Australia, Piccolo Spoleto Festival, and in residency at The Studios of Key West. Dean has received the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation screenplay award, the Helford Prize for Drama, Holland New Voices Playwright Award, two Shubert Foundation fellowships, and been a Finalist or Semi-Finalist for a whole bunch of other stuff.
